Many businesses in New Zealand falsely believe that are meeting their duty of care obligations to their employees training and competency requirements by simply having them sit through generic NZQA aligned training courses that are delivered by external training providers. Big Mistake!
As a consultant I have visited many sites/operations throughout NZ and have witnessed this first hand on more occasions than not. Don’t get me wrong, NZQA is a necessity but so is tailoring your training needs to your businesses Safety Management System or components thereof.
I have recently completed an audit at a paper mill where all of their training is delivered by external resources and is not in any way, form or manner tailored to the sites Policies, Standards and Procedures, rather it is the same old Isolation and Permit to Work training that is delivered across the country. And they wonder why they are experiencing none compliance with their safety management system!
